Hermit Thrush Rustles Up Breakfast
Christa Boothby-Raisbeck Linocut

The first bird I remember seeing at Arrowhead was a Hermit Thrush, foraging between campsites with people close by. Sometimes it would employ its subtle hunting tactic of quivering a foot on the ground, scaring out insects & invertebrates from leaves and grass beneath.
To produce this print I carved the image onto a linoleum block, rolled ink onto the block surface, then firmly pressed paper on top…resulting in ink on the paper where I hadn’t carved away the block.
CHRISTA BOOTHBY-RAISBECK recently added printmaking to her skill set. Her linocut images press pause on moments of transition in the natural world. A portion of all her sales are donated to charities for wildlife rehab or for habitat preservation/conservation, as giving back to nature fuels her purpose. @christa_boothby_raisbeck
Canoe Rental, Arrowhead Park Paul Ferris
Lino block print Prints available $30

I always liked the view of the canoe rental site at Arrowhead because of the arrangement of brightly coloured canoes and kayaks with the building behind in the trees. I took a photo for reference. I should probably have done a painting of this scene but decided to do a lino print. I did it like a drawing of fine lines and texture patterns, light lines on a dark background and I printed it and I didn't like it. The block sat around for a while. Then one day I picked it up and decided to carve out some bolder light areas and textures. Nothing to lose. And there it was.

Friendly Fox Karen Gray
Woodblock print NFS

KAREN GRAY operates The Potter’s Studio & Gallery in downtown Huntsville. She creates pottery using sgraffito — a carving technique often described as the ceramic equivalent of woodblock carving. This approach led her to explore woodblock printing in winter 2023, and with support from the Muskoka Printmaker Collective she has created a limited quantity of prints from her carved blocks. @the.potters.studio.gallery
Longitude Dawn Huddlestone Linocut $180

While on a hike early in the pandemic, my family and I encountered this big snapper enjoying the early-morning sun on a rock in Mayflower Lake. Using the photo for inspiration, I carved a mirror image into a lino block that I then rolled with black ink before pressing it onto paper. I titled this print 'Longitude' in reference to both the longevity of the species (they've been on this planet for about 90 million years) and their apparent internal compass which makes them excellent navigators of their home range.

DAWN HUDDLESTONE is a printmaker with a particular interest in alternative processes, historical techniques, and how art and nature can interact. A writer, editor, and biologist by training, Dawn extends her love for storytelling, science, and the natural world to her artwork. Her practice includes cyanotype, lumen prints, foil lithography, linocut, and woodcut relief printmaking.

Paddling Bear Elise Muller Woodblock print $225

This print is an homage to our family dog Una Bear, based on a photo taken in the bow of our cedar strip canoe on a paddle along the Big East River. I didn’t reverse the sketch so my print is the mirror image. I carved the image into birch ply with my woodcut tools and then rolled blue ink on the water and sepia ink on the rest. I’ve only printed a few “Paddling Bear” and they are all slightly different, so this is not a proper edition. I mainly printed them for my family as Una passed away a couple of years ago and it has been a great loss.

ELISE MULLER creates with ink/stone/metal at Stone Tree Studio near Dorset. She
works part-time at Haliburton School of Art + Design. Her prints are primarily relief prints
carved in wood or lino. @elisemuller_art
